NYT: Open Scientists Challenge Journal Science
In the Science section of the New York Times Monday 12.01.16 edition, author Thomas Lin summarized the state of "open science" as some scientists are practicing it on the Internet. There are now several reputable web sites which in effect replace the slow and plodding "peer review" process traditionally used by scientists to submit research papers, get intelligent feedback from colleagues who know what their papers talk about, and then allow the paper to be published in an expensive print (hard-copy, US/snail mailed) scientific journal. I (jgw) am one who thinks online collaboration on technical and scientific subjects, including the emerging field of distance learning, is "the wave of the future" but the facilitating web sites and services need much improvement.
