http://www.nypl.org The New York City Public Library web-site (nypl.org) offered a large number of digital copies of it's books online as early as 2008. The reader first has to have a NYC PL library card... which costs the reader a fee. As of May 2013 the NYPL made 880,000 e-book loans, a fivefold increase over 2008.
