Building One Big (Global) Brain
In the New York Times of 10.07.06, the "Opinionator" column, Robert Wright writes a few words about "Building One Big Brain". He refers to a new book "What Technology Wants" to be published in August 2010. He and the book observe that computer technologies in large corporations, in government (and this PI must add: in the 'Cloud' of 1000s of computer web servers world wide which now make the "world wide web" function) are organizing human beings as if we are becoming 'nodes' in a huge global inter-connected network of human-nodes. See also "the AI Singularity" idea on wikipedia and referenced elsewhere on this site.

The AI Technological Singularity
The "Technological Singularity" as defined on WikiPedia.org. As this PI paraphrases the process which brings us all to this 'singularity', it will be brought about by faster and faster computers, the Interne, artificial intelligence programs running on networked computers, and "sensors" connected to these AI programs at least in the form of other computer programs which "troll" (search through) and summarize public social networking information, public educational information, and business records including personal buying habits all of which will be published (to some extent) online.

Videos about "The Singularity" on YouTube
A somewhat scary video on YouTube.com with an artifical voice called "Eidolon" speaking supportively about what computer scientists call the coming "Singularity". But basic social and research policy issues are touched upon in the video speech. Personally this PI prefers to read the web sites with written explanations. From clicking on this link you will get a YouTube page with other related AI videos. So if "Eidolon" spooks you, turn "him" off and see other related videos about the Singularity and AI on YouTube.

Video Introduction to the Singularity Institute
A video introduction on YouTube to the "Singularity Institute". 11 minutes. This is and a good lay person's explanation to some basic issues and terms used in Artificial Intelligence researched, where AI is compared to human intelligence, the latter which is still far superior as of mid 2010. But many AI researchers want to build AI systems which surpass human intelligence. See books by "Dreyfus" at UC Berkeley for counter-opinions about the likelihood that they can do it.

NYT: The First Church of Robotics
In a New York Times opinion column dated 10.08.09, Dr. Jaron Lanier writes that we should not anticipate more from artificial intelligence than it can produce. Nor should we "deify" it at expense of degrading ourselves and our humanity.

NYT: Haiti K-12 Schools to be Public by 2030
A New York Times editorial of 10.08.17 states that by the plans of the multinational agencies "in charge" of Haitian redevelopment, K-12 education in Haiti will be public by 2030 -- in 20 years. This implies that the parents or guardians of 1-2 generations of K-12 Haitians will either have to pay for private schooling, the only other choice already "in-place" in Haiti, or let their children remain illiterate probably for the rest of their lives.

NYT: Education Needs a Digital-Age Upgrade
Virginia Heffernan writes in the 11.08.08 Op-Ed section of the New York Times that children and teens now in school will graduate to a job market in which 65% of the jobs will have never existed before. So how can traditional 19th century classroom-style education in brick-and-mortar schools and universities -- with traditional textbooks and now their eBook equivalents -- properly educate students for these not yet existing jobs -- assuming education must foremost be about vocational education? Heffernan elaborates her point of view based on recent remarks of Cathy N. Davidson, co-director of the annual MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Competitions. FWIW: this PI and a few other investigators saw this day coming over 30 years ago.
